Top 10 Things to Do in Birmingham
As a Birmingham native, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the city and discovering some of the best places to visit. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, there’s something for everyone in Birmingham. Here are my top 10 things to do in the Magic City.
1. Visit the Birmingham Zoo
The Birmingham Zoo is a must-see attraction for animal lovers. With over 200 species of animals, including endangered species like the red panda and the black rhinoceros, the zoo offers a unique experience for visitors of all ages.
Personally, I love visiting the zoo during the springtime when the weather is perfect for outdoor activities. I usually spend a few hours exploring the different exhibits and learning about the animals. One of my favorite experiences was feeding the giraffes, which was both exciting and educational.
2. Explore Railroad Park
Railroad Park is a 19-acre park located in downtown Birmingham. With walking trails, a lake, and plenty of green space, it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
During the summer, the park hosts free concerts and events, which are always a blast. I’ve attended a few concerts with friends and had a great time picnicking and listening to music. It’s a great way to spend a summer evening.
3. Visit Vulcan Park and Museum
Vulcan Park and Museum is home to the world’s largest cast iron statue, Vulcan. The park offers panoramic views of Birmingham and the surrounding areas, making it a great spot for photos.
I’ve visited the park several times and always enjoy the museum exhibits, which offer a unique look at Birmingham’s history. The park also hosts special events throughout the year, including a Fourth of July fireworks show.
4. Tour the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is a museum dedicated to the city’s role in the civil rights movement. With interactive exhibits and multimedia displays, the museum offers a powerful and thought-provoking experience.
I’ve visited the museum with both friends and family and have always been moved by the exhibits. It’s an important reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the civil rights movement and the ongoing fight for equality.
5. See a Show at the Alabama Theatre
The Alabama Theatre is a historic theater located in downtown Birmingham. Built in 1927, the theater is known for its stunning architecture and is a popular venue for concerts, movies, and plays.
I’ve seen several shows at the Alabama Theatre and have always been impressed by the quality of the performances. It’s a unique and beautiful venue that’s worth a visit, even if you’re not seeing a show.
6. Visit the Birmingham Museum of Art
The Birmingham Museum of Art is home to over 27,000 works of art, including collections of African, Asian, and European art. Admission to the museum is free, making it an accessible and affordable attraction.
I’ve visited the museum with both friends and family and have always enjoyed exploring the different exhibits. It’s a great way to spend a rainy day or a quiet afternoon.
7. Shop at The Summit
The Summit is an outdoor shopping center located in the suburbs of Birmingham. With over 70 stores and restaurants, it’s the perfect place for a day of shopping and dining.
I’ve visited The Summit with friends and have always enjoyed browsing the different stores and trying out new restaurants. It’s a great place to spend a day with friends or family.
8. Hike at Ruffner Mountain
Ruffner Mountain is a nature preserve located in eastern Birmingham. With over 14 miles of hiking trails, it’s the perfect place to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
I’ve hiked at Ruffner Mountain several times and have always enjoyed the peacefulness of the trails. It’s a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and get some fresh air.
9. Visit Sloss Furnaces
Sloss Furnaces is a National Historic Landmark located in downtown Birmingham. The site was once a pig iron-producing blast furnace and is now a museum dedicated to the city’s industrial history.
I’ve visited Sloss Furnaces with family and have always been fascinated by the history and architecture of the site. It’s a unique and educational attraction that’s worth a visit.
10. Try the Barbecue
No visit to Birmingham is complete without trying the barbecue. The city is known for its delicious and unique barbecue, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Personally, I prefer Dreamland Bar-B-Que, which has been serving up delicious barbecue since 1958. It’s a Birmingham institution and a must-visit for any barbecue lover.
