How to Make a 3D Origami Dragon Step by Step

Hi there! My name is John Johnson and I’m excited to show you how to make a 3D origami dragon. I’ve been making origami for years and this is one of my favorite designs. It may seem intimidating at first, but I promise that with a little patience and practice, you’ll have a beautiful dragon in no time.

Main Curiosities, Top Statistics, Facts, and Interesting Information

  • Origami is an ancient Japanese art form that involves folding paper into various shapes and designs.
  • The word origami comes from the Japanese words ori (to fold) and kami (paper).
  • 3D origami involves creating multiple small origami pieces and assembling them together to create a larger, three-dimensional model.
  • 3D origami is also known as golden venture folding because it became popular in the United States after Chinese immigrants on the Golden Venture ship were detained and used origami to pass the time.
  • The design for the 3D origami dragon we’ll be making today was created by a Chinese artist named Ju Youhui.

Materials

  • Approximately 500 sheets of 3-inch by 3-inch origami paper in the colors of your choice.
  • White glue or glue stick.
  • A flat workspace.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Before we begin, it’s important to note that this project requires a lot of small origami pieces. You’ll want to set aside several hours to complete this project.

Step 1: Fold the Small Triangles

Take one sheet of origami paper and fold it in half diagonally to create a triangle. Then, fold the triangle in half again to create a smaller triangle. Unfold the paper and repeat this process on the other side. You should be left with a crease down the middle of your paper in both directions.

Next, fold the bottom corner of the triangle up to the middle crease. Repeat this on the other side. Then, fold the top point of the triangle down to the bottom edge of the paper. Finally, fold the entire piece in half along the middle crease. You should now have a small triangle made up of eight layers of paper.

Repeat this process with approximately 500 sheets of origami paper in the colors of your choice.

Step 2: Assemble the Small Triangles

Now, we’ll begin assembling the small triangles into larger pieces. Take two small triangles and apply glue to one of the bottom flaps. Press the two triangles together so that the glued flap from one triangle is touching the unglued flap from the other triangle. Repeat this process with all of your small triangles until you have a large number of small, two-piece triangles.

Step 3: Assemble the Larger Triangles

Next, we’ll assemble the small, two-piece triangles into larger, four-piece triangles. Take two small triangles and apply glue to two of the bottom flaps. Press two more small triangles onto the glued flaps so that you have a larger, four-piece triangle. Repeat this process until you have a large number of four-piece triangles.

Step 4: Assemble the Dragon

Now, the fun part begins! Take your four-piece triangles and start assembling them into the dragon shape. Follow the pattern provided in the diagram below:

Start at the bottom of the dragon and work your way up. You’ll need to use glue to hold the pieces together. Be patient and take your time to make sure each piece is properly aligned. Once you’ve completed the body of the dragon, move on to the head and tail.

When you’re finished, you should have a beautiful 3D origami dragon to display and admire!

FAQs

Q: How long does it take to make a 3D origami dragon?

A: This project requires a lot of small origami pieces and can take several hours to complete.

Q: Do I need special origami paper?

A: You can use regular paper, but it’s best to use origami paper because it’s thinner and easier to fold.

Q: Can I make a 3D origami dragon in different sizes?

A: Yes, you can adjust the size of the dragon by using larger or smaller pieces of origami paper.

Q: What if I make a mistake?

A: Don’t worry! Mistakes happen. You can carefully take apart the pieces and try again.

Q: Can I make other 3D origami designs?

A: Absolutely! Once you’ve mastered the small triangles, you can create your own designs or try other popular designs like a swan or a peacock.

Thanks for joining me on this origami adventure. I hope you had fun and learned something new!
