Plot Summary

The novel begins with Paul Pennyfeather, a young man of good family, being expelled from Oxford University for reasons he does not understand. He is sent to a school in Wales, where he meets Margot Beste-Chetwynde, the school’s wealthy patroness. She takes a shine to him and invites him to stay at her estate for the summer. The two quickly fall in love. Meanwhile, Paul’s uncle, a disgraced clergyman, suggests that Paul take a job as a teacher in a private school owned by a man named Gumerry. It turns out to be a scam and Paul is arrested and sent to prison.

In prison, Paul meets a variety of characters and learns about the harshness of life. He also begins to question the values and conventions of the world he has been born into. Upon his release, Paul finds himself estranged from Margot, who has married another man, and he is forced to take a job as a teacher at another school. He finds himself in a similar situation, and is once again arrested and sent back to prison. This time, however, he is able to work out a plan to escape with the help of a few of his fellow inmates.

Paul is eventually reunited with Margot, and the two set out to build a new life together. Unfortunately, Paul’s past catches up with him and he is arrested again. This time, however, he is able to prove his innocence and is released. He and Margot set off on a journey to build a new life, and the novel ends with them happily married and living in London.
