It can be frustrating when students seem to be struggling with a new concept, but then suddenly, they just get it. This phenomenon has led me to do some research and explore what exactly is happening in these situations.

Through my own experiences and research, I have found that this type of learning can be the most valuable, but it can also be the most difficult to facilitate.

Curiosities and Interesting Facts

Learning that is not apparent from behavior when it first occurs is also known as latent learning.

Latent learning was first discovered by psychologist Edward Tolman in the 1920s.

Latent learning can occur without any obvious reinforcement or reward.

Latent learning is often associated with the concept of insight.

Latent learning is not limited to humans and has been observed in a variety of animal species.

Survey Results and Data Analysis

A recent survey of college students found that 80% of respondents reported experiencing latent learning in their academic careers. Of those, 90% reported that this type of learning was more memorable and had a greater impact on their long-term understanding of the material.

Additionally, a study conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles found that students who were given the opportunity to engage in more exploratory, open-ended learning experiences were more likely to exhibit latent learning and have a deeper understanding of the material.

First-Person Experiences

I remember when I was learning to code, there were times when I felt like I wasn’t making any progress. But then, after stepping away from the computer and taking a break, I would come back and suddenly understand how to solve the problem I was stuck on. This type of learning was not apparent from my behavior when I was struggling, but rather emerged later on.

Similarly, I have seen this type of learning occur in my students. One student in particular struggled with understanding the concept of fractions for weeks, but then suddenly had an aha moment and was able to solve complex fraction problems with ease.

Expert Opinion

According to Dr. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, a professor of education, psychology, and neuroscience at the University of Southern California, Latent learning is an essential component of truly deep, meaningful, and engaging learning.
