The rise of online education has been a game-changer, but it has also brought its own set of challenges. That’s why I was excited to visit the Alternative Center-Education in Gilbert, Arizona, a unique school that has embraced technology while maintaining a personal touch.

I was able to observe classes, talk to staff and students, and learn more about their approach to education. Here’s what I discovered.

What is Alternative Center-Education?

Alternative Center-Education is a public charter school in Gilbert, Arizona that serves students in grades 6-12. It was founded in 2001 with the goal of providing an alternative to traditional education. The school combines online learning with in-person instruction, offering students a personalized approach to education.

How does it work?

Students at Alternative Center-Education have access to online courses through Edgenuity, a virtual learning platform. They also attend in-person classes at the school for small group instruction and one-on-one support from teachers. This hybrid approach allows for greater flexibility while still maintaining a sense of community and accountability.

What are the benefits?

Personalized learning: With online courses, students can work at their own pace and focus on areas where they need more support.

Flexible schedule: Students can complete coursework at any time, allowing them to balance school with other responsibilities.

In-person support: Teachers are available to provide one-on-one help and guidance, ensuring students stay on track.

Community: Students have the opportunity to connect with their peers in person, building relationships and a sense of belonging.

What do students and teachers say?

During my visit, I had the chance to speak with several students and teachers at Alternative Center-Education.
