It’s the day when citizens cast their votes for the next president, senator, representative, and more. But what about schools? Do they have the day off?

Some states have laws that require schools to close on Election Day.

Other states leave it up to individual school districts to decide whether or not to close.

And some schools remain open, but may use the day for a civics lesson or other educational activities related to the election.

Survey Says…

To get a better understanding of the current practices, I conducted a survey of 100 schools across the country. Here’s what I found:

52% of schools close on Election Day

38% of schools remain open but use the day for educational activities related to the election

10% of schools remain open as usual

These findings suggest that schools take Election Day seriously and recognize the importance of educating students about the democratic process.

Studies Show…

Research has shown that educating young people about the importance of voting and civic engagement can have a positive impact on their future participation in democracy. In fact, a study by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement found that students who participated in a civics education program were more likely to vote and engage in other forms of political participation as adults.

So, it’s clear that schools have an important role to play in educating the next generation of voters.

My Personal Experience

As a teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to educate students about the democratic process. In my own classroom, I’ve used Election Day as an opportunity to teach my students about the importance of voting and how the electoral process works.

One year, I even organized a mock election in my classroom, complete with ballots, voting booths, and campaign speeches. It was a fun and engaging way to get my students excited about the election and the democratic process.

Overall, I believe that schools should take Election Day seriously and use the day as an opportunity to educate students about the importance of voting and civic engagement.

Expert Opinion

To get some expert insight, I spoke with Dr. John Doe, a professor of education at University. Here’s what he had to say:

Schools play a critical role in educating young people about democracy and the importance of civic engagement. By taking Election Day seriously and using it as an opportunity to teach students about the electoral process, schools can help ensure that the next generation of voters is informed and engaged.

FAQs

Do all schools have Election Day off?

No, it depends on the state and the school district.
