From web-based courses to fully-online degree programs, the prevalence of online education has grown rapidly in recent years. However, this growth has highlighted a critical need for students to develop information literacy skills in order to succeed in online courses.<\/p>\n<p>Information literacy is the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use information. In the context of online education, this means being able to navigate and utilize digital resources effectively. Without these skills, students may struggle to find reliable sources, evaluate the credibility of information, and effectively communicate their ideas.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Framework_for_Information_Literacy\"><\/span>The Framework for Information Literacy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) has developed a framework for information literacy in higher education. The framework consists of six interconnected concepts that students should develop in order to become information literate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Authority Is Constructed and Contextual<\/li>\n<li>Information Creation as a Process<\/li>\n<li>Information Has Value<\/li>\n<li>Research as Inquiry<\/li>\n<li>Scholarship as Conversation<\/li>\n<li>Searching as Strategic Exploration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By mastering these concepts, students can become more confident and effective users of information in both online and offline contexts.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Importance_of_Information_Literacy_in_Online_Education\"><\/span>The Importance of Information Literacy in Online Education<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Online education requires a unique set of skills and strategies that differ from traditional face-to-face courses. In addition to technical skills, online students must also be able to navigate complex digital environments and effectively utilize online resources. Without information literacy skills, students may struggle to keep up with the pace of online courses and may not be able to fully engage in course content.<\/p>\n<p>One study found that students who received information literacy instruction had higher GPAs and were more likely to persist in their courses than those who did not receive instruction.
