seen the evolution of education firsthand. One of the biggest changes has been the shift towards online education. However, it is important to take a step back and reflect on the history of education in this country, particularly the Indian boarding schools that were used to assimilate Native American children into white culture.

In honor of the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools on September 8th, I wanted to take a closer look at this dark chapter in American education history and explore its legacy today.

Curiosities and Interesting Facts

Indian boarding schools were established in the late 19th century as a way to assimilate Native American children into white culture and civilize them.

Children were often forcibly removed from their families and sent to these schools, where they were forbidden to speak their native language or practice their culture.

The schools were often severely underfunded and understaffed, leading to poor living conditions and inadequate education.

The trauma and abuse experienced by many Native American children in these schools has had lasting effects on their communities and families.

The National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools was established in 2013 to honor the survivors and raise awareness about this dark chapter in American history.

Personal Experiences

As a teacher, I have had the privilege of working with Native American students and learning from their experiences. This experience has shaped my understanding of the importance of teaching diverse histories and cultures in the classroom.

It is also important to recognize that the legacy of Indian boarding schools is not just a thing of the past.
