There are several reasons for this:

Make up for lost time: Some schools may have already used up their allotted snow days or other holidays, and staying open on Martin Luther King Day allows them to make up for lost time.

Parental convenience: Some parents may prefer for schools to stay open so that they don’t have to find alternative childcare arrangements.

Teachable moment: Some schools may choose to stay open and use the day as an opportunity to teach their students about Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy.

My Personal Experience

As an educator, I have worked at schools that both stayed open and closed on Martin Luther King Day. In my opinion, closing schools on this day is important to honor King’s legacy and promote his message of equality and justice.

When I worked at a school that stayed open on Martin Luther King Day, I found that it was difficult to engage students in learning when many of them were absent. It was also challenging to teach about King’s legacy when some students were not present.

On the other hand, when I worked at a school that closed on Martin Luther King Day, I found that it was a more meaningful way to honor King’s legacy and give students and teachers a chance to reflect on his message and impact.

Expert Opinion

To get an expert opinion on this topic, I spoke with Dr. James Banks, a professor of education at the University of Washington and an expert on multicultural education.

Dr. Banks emphasized the importance of honoring King’s legacy and promoting his message of equality and justice, and he believes that schools should be closed on Martin Luther King Day to do so.

He also noted that closing schools on Martin Luther King Day can be a way to address the achievement gap and promote equity in education.

FAQs

Are schools closed on Martin Luther King Day?

It varies by school district and state.
