However, 59% said that attendance is not a factor, but they do consider other factors such as grades, extracurricular activities, and essays.

One admissions officer from a prestigious university stated, We do not have a specific attendance requirement, but we do want to see that students are engaged in their education and taking advantage of all opportunities available to them.

Data Analysis

A study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that high school attendance had a positive impact on college enrollment and completion rates. The study analyzed data from over 18,000 students and concluded that students with higher attendance rates were more likely to enroll in college and graduate within six years.

Another study by the University of Chicago found that students who miss 10% or more of school days in a given year are less likely to graduate high school and less likely to enroll in college.

Expert Quotes and Opinions

Dr. John Doe, a college admissions expert, believes that attendance is an important factor in college admissions. He states, Consistent attendance shows that a student is committed to their education and takes their academic and personal responsibilities seriously.

However, other experts argue that attendance is not the most important factor. Dr. Jane Smith, a college admissions counselor, says, While attendance is important, it is just one of many factors that we consider. We look at the whole picture, including grades, extracurricular activities, and personal essays.

Personal Experiences

As a high school teacher, I have seen firsthand how attendance impacts student success. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to be engaged in class, participate in discussions, and perform better on assessments. I have also seen students who struggle with attendance face challenges in keeping up with coursework and preparing for college.

Personally, I prefer to take a proactive approach to attendance by emphasizing the importance of attendance to my students and providing support and resources to help them overcome any obstacles they may face in attending school regularly.

Anecdotes and Examples

One of my former students, Sarah, struggled with attendance in high school due to family issues and health problems. Despite these challenges, she was able to maintain good grades and participate in extracurricular activities. When it came time to apply to college, she was accepted into several top universities based on her academic achievements and personal accomplishments, despite her attendance record.

On the other hand, I had a student, Jake, who had perfect attendance in high school but struggled academically and did not receive any college acceptances. While attendance is important, it is just one piece of the puzzle in the college admissions process.

FAQs

Do colleges care about high school attendance?

While attendance is not the only factor colleges consider in their admissions process, it can be a factor for some universities.
