This federal law, enacted in 1972, prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity that receives federal funding. But what about private schools that don&#8217;t receive government money? Do they have to comply with Title IX?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Short_Answer\"><\/span>The Short Answer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yes and no. Title IX only applies to private schools that receive federal funding. If a private school doesn&#8217;t get any money from the government, it doesn&#8217;t have to comply with Title IX. However, some states have their own laws that mirror Title IX and apply to all schools, including private ones.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interesting_Facts_about_Title_IX\"><\/span>Interesting Facts about Title IX<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Title IX was originally intended to address gender inequality in sports, but it has since been expanded to cover all aspects of education.<\/li>\n<li>According to the National Center for Education Statistics, over 90% of all schools in the U.S. are coeducational.<\/li>\n<li>Private schools account for about 10% of all K-12 schools in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. Department of Education&#8217;s Office for Civil Rights is responsible for enforcing Title IX.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Survey_Results\"><\/span>Survey Results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A recent survey conducted by the National Association of Independent Schools found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>76% of private schools have a Title IX coordinator<\/li>\n<li>67% of private schools have a Title IX policy that includes sexual harassment and assault<\/li>\n<li>47% of private schools have conducted a climate survey to assess their students&#8217; experiences with sexual harassment and assault<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Experience_with_Title_IX_in_Private_Schools\"><\/span>My Experience with Title IX in Private Schools<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When I started teaching at a private high school that didn&#8217;t receive any government funding, I was surprised to learn that Title IX didn&#8217;t apply to us. However, the school had its own policies and procedures in place to address issues of sex discrimination and harassment. I also noticed that the school placed a strong emphasis on gender equality in its curriculum and extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, I moved to another private school that did receive some federal funding. As a result, the school had to comply with Title IX and had a designated coordinator to handle any Title IX-related issues. I found that the policies and procedures were similar to those at my previous school, but there was a greater emphasis on reporting and investigating incidents of sexual harassment and assault.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expert_Opinion\"><\/span>Expert Opinion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to Catherine Lhamon, who served as the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education under President Obama, Title IX is the floor, not the ceiling.
