has on education. Students of color often face systemic barriers that prevent them from achieving academic success. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important for educators to understand critical race theory and how it can be applied in the classroom.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Critical_Race_Theory\"><\/span>What is Critical Race Theory?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Critical race theory is a framework for understanding the ways in which race and racism intersect with other forms of oppression. It emerged in the 1970s and 1980s as a response to the limitations of traditional civil rights approaches to addressing racial inequality.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Concepts\"><\/span>Key Concepts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intersectionality\"><\/span>Intersectionality<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Intersectionality is the idea that individuals experience oppression in multiple ways that are interconnected. For example, a Black woman may experience racism and sexism simultaneously.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Structural_Racism\"><\/span>Structural Racism<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Structural racism refers to the ways in which societal structures and institutions perpetuate racial inequality. This can include things like discriminatory policies and practices, as well as implicit biases that are built into the system.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"White_Supremacy\"><\/span>White Supremacy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>White supremacy does not necessarily refer to overtly racist individuals or groups. Rather, it describes a system in which whiteness is valued above all else and people of color are marginalized.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_Critical_Race_Theory_Important_in_Education\"><\/span>Why is Critical Race Theory Important in Education?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Education is one of the key institutions that perpetuates racial inequality in the United States. Critical race theory provides a framework for understanding the ways in which systemic racism affects students of color in the classroom.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Survey_Results\"><\/span>Survey Results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A recent survey found that 75% of teachers had never heard of critical race theory. Of those who had heard of it, only 20% had a good understanding of the concept.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Studies_and_Data_Analysis\"><\/span>Studies and Data Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Studies have shown that students of color are disproportionately impacted by disciplinary policies in schools.
