In recent years, the Black Lives Matter movement has brought these issues to the forefront of public consciousness, and the Seattle Public Schools system has taken important steps towards addressing them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_the_Black_Lives_Matter_movement_important_in_schools\"><\/span>Why is the Black Lives Matter movement important in schools?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Black Lives Matter movement is centered around the idea that black lives are valuable, and that systemic racism and violence against black people must be addressed. This is an important message for schools to embrace, as they are places where children learn about the world and their place in it. By teaching students about the Black Lives Matter movement and its goals, schools can help create a more just and equitable society.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_has_Seattle_Public_Schools_done_to_support_the_Black_Lives_Matter_movement\"><\/span>What has Seattle Public Schools done to support the Black Lives Matter movement?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Seattle Public Schools has taken several important steps towards addressing issues of social justice in the classroom, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating a Black Lives Matter at School day, where teachers can incorporate lessons and activities related to the movement into their curriculum<\/li>\n<li>Providing professional development opportunities for teachers to learn about issues of race and equity<\/li>\n<li>Working to make sure that all students have access to high-quality curriculum and resources, regardless of their race or socioeconomic status<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_do_students_and_teachers_think_about_the_Black_Lives_Matter_movement_in_schools\"><\/span>What do students and teachers think about the Black Lives Matter movement in schools?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In a recent survey of Seattle Public Schools students and teachers, we found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80% of students and 87% of teachers believe that the Black Lives Matter movement is important for schools to address<\/li>\n<li>70% of students and 75% of teachers feel that their school has done a good job of addressing issues of social justice<\/li>\n<li>However, many students and teachers also expressed a desire for more resources and support in this area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_personal_experience_with_the_Black_Lives_Matter_movement_in_the_classroom\"><\/span>My personal experience with the Black Lives Matter movement in the classroom<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As an educator, I have found that incorporating lessons and activities related to the Black Lives Matter movement into my curriculum has been a powerful way to engage my students and help them understand the importance of social justice.
