class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As an educator who has been teaching in the United States for many years, I have witnessed firsthand the benefits and drawbacks of using schools as vehicles for cultural transmission. While it is important for students to learn about different cultures and perspectives, there is one major drawback to this approach that often goes overlooked: the potential for cultural appropriation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Cultural_Appropriation\"><\/span>What is Cultural Appropriation?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cultural appropriation is the act of taking elements of a culture that is not your own and using them without permission or understanding. This can range from wearing a headdress as a fashion statement to using traditional practices and symbols in inappropriate ways. It is often seen as disrespectful and can perpetuate harmful stereotypes.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Role_of_Schools_in_Cultural_Transmission\"><\/span>The Role of Schools in Cultural Transmission<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Schools have the responsibility of educating students about different cultures and promoting diversity and inclusion. However, in doing so, there is a risk of cultural appropriation. For example, schools may teach about Native American culture but fail to provide accurate and respectful representations. Students may then go on to appropriate elements of that culture without understanding the history and significance behind them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Personal_Experience\"><\/span>Personal Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When I was teaching a unit on African American history, I made the mistake of having my students participate in a slave auction activity. While my intention was to teach them about the horrors of slavery, the activity was insensitive and inappropriate. It was not until a student of mine, who was of African American descent, spoke up and expressed how uncomfortable she felt that I realized the harm I had caused. I learned from this experience and now make a conscious effort to ensure that all of my lessons are respectful and accurate.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Impact_of_Cultural_Appropriation\"><\/span>The Impact of Cultural Appropriation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cultural appropriation can have a harmful impact on individuals and communities. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes and can lead to the erasure of cultural traditions. It also reinforces power imbalances and can lead to the exploitation of marginalized communities. For example, the appropriation of traditional Native American headdresses as fashion accessories not only disrespects the significance of the headdress but also takes away from the cultural significance of the item.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Data_Analysis\"><\/span>Data Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A survey conducted by the American Indian Graduate Center found that 81% of Native Americans found the use of Native American mascots and imagery to be offensive.
