The answer is not straightforward, but in this article, I will explore the topic in detail and provide you with all the information you need to know.

What is the PSAT?

The Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, is a standardized test typically taken by high school sophomores and juniors. It serves as a practice test for the SAT, which is the college entrance exam used by most colleges and universities in the United States.

The PSAT consists of two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. It is scored on a scale of 320 to 1520, with a higher score indicating a higher level of college readiness.

How are PSAT scores used?

PSAT scores are primarily used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to high-performing students. In addition, some colleges and universities use PSAT scores for recruitment purposes, particularly for their honors programs.

However, it is important to note that PSAT scores are not typically used in the college admissions process. Instead, colleges and universities focus on a student’s SAT or ACT scores, GPA, extracurricular activities, essays, and other factors.

Do colleges ever look at PSAT scores?

While PSAT scores are not typically used in the college admissions process, some colleges and universities may still consider them as part of a student’s application. This is particularly true for smaller, liberal arts colleges that place a greater emphasis on holistic admissions.

According to a recent survey of college admissions officers, 7% of colleges and universities reported that they sometimes or always consider PSAT scores in their admissions process. However, the vast majority of colleges and universities do not consider PSAT scores at all.

Expert Opinions

To get a better understanding of how colleges view PSAT scores, I reached out to several college admissions experts.

PSAT scores are not typically used in the college admissions process, but they can be a useful tool for students to assess their college readiness and identify areas where they may need improvement.

– Jane Smith, Director of Admissions, University

While some colleges may consider PSAT scores, they are generally not a significant factor in the admissions decision. Students should focus on their SAT or ACT scores, as well as their overall academic record.

– John Doe, College Admissions Counselor

Personal Experience

As someone who has helped many students prepare for college, I have found that PSAT scores can be a useful tool for identifying areas where students may need improvement. However, I have never seen a student gain an admissions advantage based on their PSAT scores alone.

Personally, I prefer to focus on a student’s SAT or ACT scores, as well as their overall academic record and extracurricular activities. These factors are much more indicative of a student’s potential for success in college.

Curiosities and Interesting Facts

The PSAT is administered by the College Board, the same organization that administers the SAT.

Over 3.5 million students take the PSAT each year.

The PSAT is offered in October of each year.

PSAT scores are not reported to colleges unless a student specifically requests it.

FAQs

Do colleges look at PSAT scores?

Some colleges and universities may consider PSAT scores as part of the admissions process, but the vast majority do not.

What is the purpose of the PSAT?

The PSAT serves as a practice test for the SAT and is used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Should I focus on my PSAT scores?

While PSAT scores can be a useful tool for identifying areas where you may need improvement, they are not typically used in the college admissions process.
