However, as a college professor, I also know that students and faculty members often have questions about whether colleges and universities are open on this federal holiday.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Curiosities_and_Interesting_Facts\"><\/span>Curiosities and Interesting Facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year<\/li>\n<li>The holiday was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983<\/li>\n<li>Many colleges and universities use MLK Day as a day of service and encourage students to volunteer in their communities<\/li>\n<li>In 2023, a survey found that 42% of colleges and universities were open on MLK Day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Survey_Results\"><\/span>Survey Results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A recent survey conducted by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities found that 42% of colleges and universities were open on MLK Day. On the other hand, I know that many students rely on every class meeting to keep up with coursework and that canceling classes can disrupt their learning.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I have chosen to cancel classes on MLK Day and to encourage my students to participate in service projects in their communities.
