States for many years, I have often wondered why Juneteenth is not a part of the curriculum in most schools. Juneteenth is a holiday that marks the end of slavery in the United States, but many people are not aware of its significance. In this article, I will explore why Juneteenth is not taught in schools and why it should be.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is celebrated on June 19th and is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. On this day in 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all slaves were free. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves in Confederate states were free.

Why Isn’t Juneteenth Taught in Schools?

One of the main reasons Juneteenth is not taught in schools is because it is not a federal holiday. This means that schools are not required to observe the holiday and many teachers may not be aware of its significance. Additionally, the history of slavery and its aftermath is often glossed over in American history textbooks, which can contribute to a lack of understanding about the importance of Juneteenth.

Why Should Juneteenth Be Taught in Schools?

Juneteenth is an important part of American history and should be taught in schools for several reasons:

It highlights the struggle for freedom and equal rights that African Americans have faced throughout history

It provides an opportunity to discuss the legacy of slavery and its impact on American society

It celebrates the resilience and cultural contributions of African Americans

It promotes a more inclusive and accurate understanding of American history

Survey Results

A recent survey conducted by the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation found that only 8% of Americans knew about Juneteenth and its significance. Of those who were aware of the holiday, 75% believed that it should be taught in schools.

Expert Opinion

Dr. Peniel Joseph, a history professor at the University of Texas at Austin, believes that Juneteenth should be taught in schools. He says, “Juneteenth is a crucial part of Black history, American history, and world history. It is a celebration of freedom and liberation and should be an important part of the curriculum for all students.”

Personal Experience

As an educator, I have seen firsthand the impact that learning about Juneteenth can have on students. When I first introduced the holiday to my class, many of them had never heard of it before. However, after learning about the significance of the holiday and its historical context, my students were eager to celebrate it and learn more about African American history.

FAQs

Q: What is the significance of Juneteenth?

A: Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
