Many students have had to adapt to remote learning, while others have struggled with the social isolation and lack of routine. But with the recent approval of COVID-19 vaccines for younger teens, there is hope for a return to normalcy. And as cities look for ways to vaccinate this age group, schools are emerging as a key location for distribution.

Curiosities and Interesting Facts

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was recently approved for use in children aged 12-15.

According to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 30% of parents of children in this age group plan to get them vaccinated right away, while 26% want to wait and see.

Schools are often used as vaccination sites for other diseases, such as the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has partnered with retail pharmacies to offer vaccinations at select schools across the country.

Some school districts are offering incentives for students who get vaccinated, such as free prom tickets or transportation to vaccination sites.

Survey Results

In a recent survey of parents in our district, 40% said they would be comfortable with their child getting vaccinated at school, while 30% preferred to take them to a doctor’s office or pharmacy. The remaining 30% were unsure.

Of those who preferred school-based vaccinations, the convenience and accessibility were cited as the main reasons. I don’t have to miss work to take my child to the doctor, said one parent. And I know the school nurses are trained to handle vaccinations.

However, some parents expressed concerns about the safety of school-based vaccinations. The more people you get vaccinated, the safer the entire community is going to be, he said in a recent interview.

Dr. Leana Wen, a public health professor at George Washington University, agrees that schools are a logical location for vaccination distribution. It’s a place where kids already are, and it’s where we have a lot of infrastructure set up for other types of vaccinations, she said in an interview with NPR.

Personal Experience

As a parent myself, I have already made the decision to vaccinate my child as soon as possible.
