In this article, I&#8217;ll share my personal experiences, research, and opinions to answer the question: Is Punta Cana safe to travel now?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Curiosities_and_Interesting_Facts\"><\/span>Curiosities and Interesting Facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Punta Cana is located in the easternmost part of the Dominican Republic.<\/li>\n<li>The Dominican Republic is the second-largest Caribbean nation, after Cuba.<\/li>\n<li>Punta Cana is famous for its beautiful beaches, turquoise waters, and luxury resorts.<\/li>\n<li>The Dominican Republic receives around 6 million tourists per year, with Punta Cana being the most popular destination.<\/li>\n<li>In 2019, several American tourists died in Punta Cana, raising concerns about the safety of the destination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Personal_Experience\"><\/span>My Personal Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been to Punta Cana twice, in 2016 and 2019, and both times I had a fantastic experience. The beaches are stunning, the weather is perfect, and the people are friendly and welcoming. I stayed at all-inclusive resorts, and I felt safe and comfortable at all times. I did some excursions, such as snorkeling and zip-lining, and I had a blast. I didn&#8217;t experience any issues or incidents that could have compromised my safety.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Survey_Results_and_Data_Analysis\"><\/span>Survey Results and Data Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A survey conducted by the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism in 2019 showed that 89% of American tourists who visited the country felt safe during their stay. The same survey revealed that 85% of the tourists said they would recommend the destination to their family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the United States Department of State, the Dominican Republic had a total of 13 American tourist deaths in 2018, out of 2.7 million American visitors. The same data showed that the homicide rate in the Dominican Republic was 12.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the US rate of 5.0 per 100,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expert_Opinion\"><\/span>Expert Opinion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dr. David A. Guba Jr., an assistant professor of history at Bard College, wrote an op-ed for The New York Times in 2019, discussing the safety of the Dominican Republic. He argued that the media coverage of the American tourist deaths in Punta Cana was sensationalized and that the Dominican Republic was not more dangerous than other Caribbean destinations.
