Top 10 Things to Do in Galveston

As a Texas native, I’ve spent plenty of time in Galveston and have discovered some amazing things to do in this charming coastal town. Whether you’re a history buff, beach lover, or foodie, there’s something for everyone in Galveston. Here are my top 10 recommendations.

1. Visit the Historic Pleasure Pier

The Pleasure Pier is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Galveston. This iconic amusement park boasts over 16 rides, games, and attractions for all ages. The Ferris wheel offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico, and the roller coaster is a heart-pumping thrill ride. I went on the roller coaster and it led to a newfound appreciation for adrenaline rushes.

2. Explore the Moody Gardens

The Moody Gardens is a unique attraction that combines nature, education, and entertainment. The pyramids house a variety of exhibits, including a rainforest, aquarium, and 3D theater. My favorite exhibit is the butterfly garden, where you can walk among hundreds of colorful butterflies. I prefer going early in the morning to avoid crowds.

3. Walk Along the Seawall

The Galveston Seawall is a 10-mile stretch of concrete that separates the city from the Gulf of Mexico. Walking along the seawall is a great way to take in the ocean views and get some exercise. There are plenty of benches and picnic tables to stop and enjoy the scenery. I love to bring a picnic basket and watch the sunset over the water.

4. Visit the Historic Strand District

The Strand District is a charming historic district that’s home to shops, restaurants, and museums. The buildings date back to the 1800s and have been beautifully restored. I recommend visiting during the holidays when the district is decorated with festive lights and decorations. The Strand is also home to the annual Mardi Gras celebration.

5. Relax on the Beach

Galveston has 32 miles of beaches, so there’s no shortage of places to relax and soak up the sun. My favorite beach is Stewart Beach, which offers clean restrooms, showers, and food stands. If you’re looking for a quieter spot, head to East Beach or West Beach. Remember to bring sunscreen!

6. Take a Dolphin Tour

Galveston is home to a large population of dolphins, and there are plenty of tour companies that offer dolphin watching tours. These tours are a great way to get up close and personal with these friendly creatures. I went on a tour and was amazed by how many dolphins we saw – they were jumping and playing in the waves!

7. Try the Seafood

Being a coastal town, Galveston is known for its fresh seafood. There are plenty of restaurants that serve up delicious shrimp, oysters, and fish. Some of my favorites include Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant and The Spot. I recommend trying the shrimp and grits – it’s a classic dish in the South.

8. Visit the Bishop’s Palace

The Bishop’s Palace is a stunning Victorian mansion that’s open for tours. The house was built in 1892 and features intricate woodwork, stained glass windows, and elegant furnishings. I took a tour and was blown away by the beauty and history of the house.

9. Go Fishing

Fishing is a popular pastime in Galveston, thanks to the abundance of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. There are plenty of fishing charters that offer half-day and full-day trips. I went on a fishing trip and caught several red snapper – it was a great experience!

10. Visit the Galveston Island State Park

The Galveston Island State Park is a nature lover’s paradise. The park features hiking trails, fishing spots, and birdwatching opportunities. There’s also a beach area where you can swim and relax. I love to go on a hike and take in the natural beauty of the park.
