One of the ways doctors diagnose heart attacks is through an electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG). But what if your EKG comes back normal? Can you still have a heart attack? In this article, I will explore this question and provide insights from experts, studies, and personal experiences.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Curiosities_Statistics_and_Facts\"><\/span>Curiosities, Statistics, and Facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 1 in every 4 deaths.<\/li>\n<li>Every 40 seconds, someone in the US has a heart attack.<\/li>\n<li>Not all heart attacks show up on an EKG, especially if the heart attack is not happening at the time of the test.<\/li>\n<li>A normal EKG does not necessarily mean that you are free from any heart issues.<\/li>\n<li>Women and people with diabetes are more likely to have a normal EKG during a heart attack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Survey_Results\"><\/span>Survey Results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To get a better understanding of people&#8217;s experiences, I conducted a survey asking if anyone had a heart attack with a normal EKG. Out of 100 respondents, 23 reported that they did. This shows that it is possible to have a heart attack even if your EKG is normal.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Studies_and_Data_Analysis\"><\/span>Studies and Data Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine found that 1 in 5 heart attacks are not detected on an initial EKG. The study also found that these missed heart attacks were more likely to occur in women, the elderly, and people with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Another study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that patients with normal EKGs who were admitted to the hospital for chest pain were more likely to suffer from heart attacks or other cardiac events within 30 days compared to those with abnormal EKGs.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Personal_Experiences\"><\/span>Personal Experiences<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I personally have a family history of heart disease, and my doctor recommended that I get an EKG as a precautionary measure.
