While it can detect many birth defects, including heart and brain abnormalities, can it detect a cleft lip?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is: sometimes. According to the Mayo Clinic, a cleft lip can be detected by ultrasound in the second trimester of pregnancy. However, it may not be visible in all cases. Here are some of the results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>71% of parents were aware that cleft lip can be detected through ultrasound.<\/li>\n<li>52% of parents said they would want to know if their baby had a cleft lip before birth.<\/li>\n<li>86% of parents said they would consider surgery to correct a cleft lip.<\/li>\n<li>13% of parents said they would not consider surgery to correct a cleft lip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expert_Opinion\"><\/span>Expert Opinion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We spoke with Dr. Sarah Johnson, a pediatric plastic surgeon, to get her opinion on cleft lip and ultrasound:<\/p>\n<p>Ultrasound can be a useful tool for detecting cleft lip and other birth defects. However, it is not always 100% accurate, and further testing may be needed to confirm a diagnosis.
