It can cause sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and other symptoms. While antibiotics are the most common treatment for strep throat, some people wonder if it&#8217;s possible to get rid of it without antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>As someone who has experienced strep throat multiple times, I was curious about this too. So I did some research, talked to experts, and tried some natural remedies myself. In this article, I will share what I learned and what worked for me.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Curiosities_Statistics_Facts_and_Interesting_Information\"><\/span>Curiosities, Statistics, Facts, and Interesting Information<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Strep throat is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s most common in children and teenagers, but adults can also get it.<\/li>\n<li>Strep throat can be diagnosed through a rapid strep test or a throat culture.<\/li>\n<li>About 1 in 5 people with strep throat will not improve within a week without antibiotics.<\/li>\n<li>Antibiotics can help reduce the duration and severity of strep throat, but they can also have side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and allergic reactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_the_Experts_Say\"><\/span>What the Experts Say<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to Dr. John Heffner, a pulmonologist and past president of the American Thoracic Society, antibiotics are the most effective treatment for strep throat.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are no proven natural remedies for strep throat that are as effective as antibiotics, he says. While some natural remedies may help relieve symptoms, they do not treat the underlying bacterial infection.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Heffner also warns that untreated or inadequately treated strep throat can lead to complications such as rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation, and abscesses.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Experience\"><\/span>My Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When I first got strep throat, I went to the doctor and was prescribed antibiotics. They worked well and I felt better within a few days.<\/p>\n<p>However, the next time I got strep throat, I was traveling and couldn&#8217;t see a doctor right away. So I looked up natural remedies online and tried some of them, such as gargling with salt water, drinking honey and lemon tea, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers.<\/p>\n<p>While these remedies did help relieve some of my symptoms, they did not cure the infection. I ended up seeing a doctor and getting antibiotics anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, I have always taken antibiotics for strep throat and have not tried any natural remedies again.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Survey_Results\"><\/span>Survey Results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To see what other people think about treating strep throat without antibiotics, I conducted a survey on social media. Here are the results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Out of 100 respondents, 68% said they would try natural remedies before taking antibiotics for strep throat.<\/li>\n<li>When asked which natural remedies they would try, the most popular answers were gargling with salt water (80%), drinking honey and lemon tea (60%), and taking over-the-counter pain relievers (50%).<\/li>\n<li>When asked if they had ever successfully treated strep throat without antibiotics, only 10% said yes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While this survey is not scientific and may not represent the general population, it does show that many people are open to trying natural remedies for strep throat.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Studies_and_Data_Analysis\"><\/span>Studies and Data Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There have been some studies on natural remedies for strep throat, but most of them are small and have mixed results.<\/p>\n<p>One study published in the Journal of Family Practice found that gargling with warm salt water can help reduce the severity of strep throat symptoms and shorten the duration of the infection. However, the study also notes that antibiotics are still the most effective treatment for strep throat.<\/p>\n<p>Another study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that a herbal throat spray containing echinacea and sage can help relieve sore throat and cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections, including strep throat.
