Shardlake must unravel the mystery of why the monastery\u2019s prior and a monk have been killed whilst uncovering a much deeper conspiracy. Along the way, Shardlake is also forced to confront the sweeping changes of the King\u2019s break with Rome and the dissolution of the monasteries.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Plot\"><\/span>The Plot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Shardlake is sent to investigate the murder of a prior at an isolated monastery on the Yorkshire moors after a monk confesses to the crime. When Shardlake arrives, he is met with disinterest and hostility from the local community and the monks. After further investigation, Shardlake discovers a much deeper conspiracy at play. He discovers that the prior had been investigating a local land dispute which could have implications for the King and the dissolution of the monasteries. To make matters worse, Shardlake is then accused of the prior\u2019s murder. Shardlake must find a way to prove his innocence whilst uncovering the truth behind the prior\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Themes\"><\/span>Key Themes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dissolution explores themes of power, corruption and justice.
