Plot Summary

The story opens with Alexei Ivanovitch, a Russian tutor, arriving in the German spa town of Roulettenburg. He is there to take care of his employer’s daughter, Polina. Alexei soon begins to gamble and falls into a deep addiction. He loses all of his money and is forced to borrow from Polina in order to keep gambling. Polina, however, is in love with Alexei, and she continues to provide him with money, despite his addiction. Eventually, Alexei is able to break his addiction and he and Polina are able to be together.

Polina’s grandmother is determined to keep her away from Alexei and arranges for her to marry an elderly General. This angers Alexei and he challenges the General to a duel. The duel is stopped by Polina’s aunt and the General is forced to leave. This incident leads to Polina being disowned by her family and she and Alexei are able to be together.
