Plot Summary

Thad Beaumont is a successful writer who also publishes novels under the pseudonym George Stark. After his Stark novels become popular, Beaumont decides to “kill off” his pseudonym in a public ceremony. However, Stark’s fictional persona takes on a life of its own and begins to terrorize Beaumont and those around him.

Beaumont discovers that Stark is a physical manifestation of his own dark half, created from the botched removal of twin fetuses he absorbed in utero. Stark is a homicidal maniac who seeks revenge against those who wronged Beaumont, including the journalist who revealed Beaumont’s secret identity.

Beaumont eventually confronts Stark and kills him in a physical battle. After Stark’s death, Beaumont is able to come to terms with his own dark half, making peace with the duality of his identity.
