Plot Summary

The Beggar’s Opera tells the story of highwayman Macheath, who is arrested by his old friend, the corrupt magistrate Lockit, and sentenced to death. Meanwhile, Polly Peachum, the daughter of a wealthy London businessman, learns that Macheath is in prison and sets out to save him. She rallies the underworld of London to help her, enlisting the help of the criminal Lowten and the beggar Lucy Lockit. They break Macheath out of prison and he is reunited with Polly.

The story concludes with Macheath’s escape and his reunion with Polly. However, the play does not end happily for all the characters. Lockit is arrested and sentenced to death, and Lucy Lockit is left heartbroken that Macheath chose Polly over her.
