Summary of the Book

Shadow and Bone is a fantasy novel by American author Leigh Bardugo, published in 2012. Set in an alternate version of 19th century Russia, it follows the story of Alina Starkov, an orphaned soldier who discovers she has the power to control the sun and light. As she embarks on a quest to save her country from the Darkling and his evil forces, she learns about her own strengths and weaknesses, her relationships with other people, and the true power of love.

Plot

In Shadow and Bone, Alina Starkov is an orphaned soldier in the First Army of Ravka, a country divided by a powerful wall of darkness known as the Shadow Fold. One day, Alina discovers she has the power to control the sun and light, and the King of Ravka orders her to join the Grisha- a group of elite magic users.

Alina is tutored by the mysterious and powerful Darkling, who tries to use her power to destroy the Shadow Fold. But Alina soon discovers the Darkling’s true intentions- to use her power to become immortal. With the help of her friends Mal and Genya, Alina must find a way to stop the Darkling and save her country.
