Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare in the early 1590s. It tells the story of two young star-crossed lovers from two rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Despite their families’ long-standing feud, Romeo and Juliet fall in love and secretly marry. In the end, the two families reconcile, but only after Romeo and Juliet both take their own lives.

Plot Summary

The play opens with a street brawl between members of the Montague and Capulet families. The Prince of Verona, Escalus, intervenes and orders them to stop the fighting. Later that night, Romeo, a Montague, attends a party at the Capulet’s house in disguise. There, he meets Juliet, a Capulet, and they instantly fall in love. Later, Romeo learns that Juliet is a Capulet, and he is heartbroken.

The next day, Romeo and Juliet meet in secret and declare their love for each other. They are secretly married by Friar Lawrence. Meanwhile, Juliet’s cousin Tybalt is looking for Romeo to avenge the previous night’s fight. Romeo kills Tybalt in a fit of rage and is banished from Verona.

Juliet’s father then arranges for her to marry Paris, a kinsman of the Prince. After consulting with Friar Lawrence, Juliet takes a potion that will make her appear dead for 42 hours. During this time, Romeo is to be informed of the plan. Unfortunately, the plan goes awry and Romeo believes Juliet to be dead. He returns to Verona and kills himself at Juliet’s tomb. Juliet wakes up and, upon seeing Romeo’s corpse, kills herself. Upon hearing of their deaths, the Montagues and Capulets reconcile.
