Plot

The novel follows Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old girl from the poverty-stricken slums of the Kingdom of Norta. She lives with her family in a small village, barely scraping by. When she turns seventeen, Mare is forced to leave her family behind and travel to the capital city of Norta to find work. She discovers that she has a rare and powerful ability: the power to control electricity. This power marks her as a member of the Silver Elite, a group of genetically-enhanced humans with extraordinary abilities who rule Norta.

Mare is taken in by the royal family and is trained to use her powers. She is tasked with infiltrating the growing rebellion against the Silver Elite and thwarting their plans. In the midst of the rebellion, Mare falls in love with a young Red Guard soldier, Cal, who is fighting for the rebel cause. Despite their differences, Mare and Cal are drawn together. As the rebellion intensifies, Mare must decide where her loyalties lie and use her power to protect the kingdom from the warring silver families.
