Plot Summary

In Pretties, Tally is sixteen years old and is about to become a “Pretty”, the highest level of beauty in the society. She has been raised to believe that being a Pretty is the ultimate goal and that her life will be perfect when she becomes one. But before she can become a Pretty, she must pass a test in which she must answer questions about the “New Pretty Town”, the city in which she lives.

When she passes the test, she is taken to the New Pretty Town and undergoes the operation to become a Pretty. But when she wakes up, she finds out that she has been given a special job to do by the Specials, a group of people who have been given enhanced intelligence and physical abilities. She is sent to find out what is going on in a secret underground city known as The Smoke, which is populated by people who are living outside of the city’s control.

Tally eventually finds out that The Smoke is populated by people who are trying to find a way to reverse the effects of the operation that made them Pretties. She also finds out that the Specials are trying to keep the people in The Smoke from discovering the truth about the operation. Tally must decide whether to stay within the city’s rules or join the rebels and fight against them.
