Plot

The play begins with Phaedra’s nurse, Oenone, warning Phaedra not to trust her stepson Hippolytus. Phaedra, however, is unable to control her feelings and eventually confesses her love to Hippolytus. Hippolytus is horrified and rejects her advances. In a fit of rage, Phaedra accuses Hippolytus of attempting to rape her. This leads to his banishment by Phaedra’s husband and father-in-law, Theseus.

In the meantime, Phaedra’s brother, Arcas, arrives to help Hippolytus clear his name. In an attempt to protect Hippolytus, Arcas reveals the truth of Phaedra’s love to Theseus. Distraught, Theseus curses Hippolytus and the two are forced to flee.

Phaedra, broken by her guilt and shame, eventually takes her own life. Hippolytus is then revealed to be innocent and Theseus is forced to recognize his mistake. In the end, Hippolytus is forgiven and the curse is lifted.
